Every 10 years for smoke, every 5–7 years for CO. Even if the alarm still chirps and the battery is fresh, the sensor inside degrades. We recommend replacing them all at once so you have a consistent end-of-life date.
Either works. Combo units are simpler — one device per location. We typically use First Alert SC9120B (smoke) and SCO500B (combo) hardwired interconnected units, both code-compliant for South Carolina.
NFPA 72 is the national alarm code that South Carolina adopts. Briefly: a smoke alarm in every bedroom, one in every hallway outside sleeping areas, and one on every level including the basement. CO alarms within 10 feet of every sleeping area. We audit your home for free and tell you what's missing.
Within 10 feet of every sleeping area, in any home with a gas appliance, gas water heater, fireplace, or attached garage. Most homes need at least 2 CO detectors.
Most jobs fall between $450 and $900 for 6–10 hardwired interconnected units installed, depending on whether we're replacing existing or running new wire to add code-required locations.
